Watching a flock of American Goldfinches feast on the seeds of sunflowers is one of my favorite fall scenes. These small songbirds generally travel in flocks. While they can be attracted to birdfeeders stocked with thistle or sunflower seeds, the best way to attract them is to plant a variety of native sunflowers and related species such as coneflowers and asters. Leave the flower stalks standing through the winter to provide food for these beautiful songbirds. Giclee’ print from an original watercolor by Susan Quinlan
