Penstemon Visitor

Broad-tailed hummingbird visiting a firecracker penstemon (Penstemon eatonii). All penstemon species delight me with their bright flowers and the variety of pollinators they attract, but I love to have firecracker penstemon around mainly because this plant’s bright red flowers bloom in late spring and early summer just as Broad-tailed Hummingbirds are arriving from their wintering areas in Mexico and Central America. Hungry from their long-distance travel, these tiny migrants never fail to visit these bright red flowers in search of nectar and pollen.
