Colorado Collection

Dark-eyed Juncos are among the most common winter visitors in Colorado and many of the Lower 48 states. Although all belong to a single species and intermix on the wintering grounds, juncos disperse in spring to nesting areas in several distinct areas. This breeding separation has led to the development of several different types or subspecies. Only one junco type remains in Colorado during summer. I painted this image mainly to help myself memorize the traits and names of the five most common junco types that return to Colorado each fall and stay for winter. I then added the junco type name below each bird to help myself and others remember the plumage pattern of each race.
