House Wren in Boulder Raspberry

This painting celebrates a house wren in spring on one of my favorite native shrubs. When these little birds return from their wintering grounds, they immediately begin singing and undertake active inspection of nest sites including natural crevices and bird houses. In my yard, they seem to love perching in the beautiful Boulder Raspberry bushes that explode with large white flowers in late May. While the wrens are setting up territories, building nests, laying eggs and feeding chicks, they are quite easy to notice. But in mid-summer their behavior changes. Though still around through fall, these wrens tend to be secretive and shy. The house wrens' habit of frequenting Boulder raspberry in spring inspired this painting.
